Kids Seek The Sandman to Save Parents’ Marriage in ‘In Your Dreams’

Date:

A magical quest to solve a very real-world problem forms the heartfelt center of the new animated film “In Your Dreams.” This adventure-comedy, opening Friday, follows siblings Stevie (Jolie Hoang-Rappaport) and Elliot (Elias Janssen) as they journey into a fantasy world. Their mission: to find The Sandman. The children are driven by the poignant belief that this mythical figure holds the magic needed to save the fracturing marriage of their parents.
This fantasy plot, however, serves a deeper, more grounded message. The film, from “Ratatouille” alum director Alex Woo, is built on the theme that “real families fight.” It courageously moves away from the idealized, conflict-free portrayals often seen in animation, tackling the complexities of family life with honesty. The children’s quest for a simple fix highlights a poignant, relatable childhood desire to magically resolve adult problems.
The parents at the center of the conflict are voiced by a stellar cast, with Simu Liu as the father and Cristin Milioti as the mother. Liu, in particular, has passionately championed the film’s honest message, rejecting the “false” narrative of the “always happy” family and stressing the need for kids to see imperfect, realistic family dynamics. Craig Robinson also lends his voice to the film as Baloney Tony.
The film expertly balances its emotional weight with genuine humor and tender moments. One such moment is a “beautiful” duet performed by Liu and Milioti, offering a glimpse of the harmony and love that still exists between the characters despite their struggles. Cristin Milioti herself called the song “really great,” highlighting its importance in the narrative.
The story concludes not with a convenient magical spell, but with a powerful and mature realization. The young hero, Stevie, must ultimately accept that “there is no magic solution to real-life problems.” This powerful lesson on resilience and acceptance is what makes “In Your Dreams” a standout film, proving that animation can explore complex truths with both heart and humor.
