“US Rethinks G20 Boycott After Clash Over South Africa’s Policies”

Date:

Washington is reconsidering its decision to stay away from the G20 summit, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa revealed. Discussions have begun, but there is still uncertainty around President Trump’s personal attendance. The policy reversal marks a significant twist just days before the summit.
Trump previously accused South Africa of racial discrimination and violence against white farmers. The South African government strongly rejected these claims. Officials continued organizing the historic summit despite the diplomatic dispute.
Ramaphosa welcomed the US shift as “very positive,” noting that boycotts rarely achieve productive outcomes. He stressed the importance of engagement, especially in global forums that shape economic policy. The sudden timing, however, remains an operational challenge.
Earlier, Washington sent a diplomatic note insisting that no G20 declaration be made without its involvement. South African officials condemned the message, saying it undermines the credibility of the G20. They argued that an absent member cannot dictate consensus.
South Africa’s priorities for its G20 presidency include development finance, energy transition, and global equality. Ramaphosa urged all participating nations to contribute constructively to these objectives.
