The End of Hamas? Militant Group Faces Existential Choice

Date:

The 20-point peace plan presented by the United States is more than a ceasefire proposal; it is an existential threat to Hamas. The militant group is now facing a monumental choice: accept a deal that requires its complete dissolution as an armed force or risk being annihilated militarily.
President Donald Trump has given the group a stark 3-4 day ultimatum. The core condition of his plan is that Hamas must “lay down its arms” and be barred from any future governance in Gaza. This demand strikes at the very foundation of the group’s identity and its decades-long armed struggle against Israel.
The offer is sweetened with significant concessions aimed at the Palestinian people. An end to the war, an Israeli withdrawal, a prisoner exchange, and a massive reconstruction program are all on the table. Trump has also secured the backing of Israel and the Arab world, leaving Hamas to make this existential choice alone.
The conflict, which began with Hamas’s attack on October 7, 2023, has resulted in catastrophic losses for Gaza, with over 66,000 killed. This immense suffering places incredible pressure on Hamas leaders to prioritize the welfare of their people over the survival of their organization.
Hamas has stated it will discuss the proposal internally. The outcome of these discussions will determine whether the group chooses a path of political transformation and survival or a final, bloody confrontation that could mean its end.
