Trump and Xi Talk Middle East Conflict Amid Iran’s Peace Proposal

Date:

During a summit on September 25, U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping engaged in discussions regarding the escalating conflict in the Middle East, as Iran presented a proposal for a seven-day peace plan. This plan, aimed at de-escalating tensions in the region, includes reopening the Strait of Hormuz to normal maritime traffic, contingent upon U.S. acceptance.

Chinese President Xi urged both the United States and Iran to revive the framework established in June that had previously led to a temporary ceasefire, advocating for renewed negotiations to achieve a broader settlement. While Iran expressed support for Xi’s suggestion, it simultaneously advanced its own peace initiative. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi outlined that the plan involves ending hostilities, lifting the U.S. blockade on Iranian ports, releasing frozen Iranian funds, and removing oil sanctions.

Although the United States has not publicly accepted Iran’s proposal, ongoing discussions through intermediaries have been described as constructive, particularly concerning nuclear issues. However, Iran has maintained its stance on not making concessions related to its nuclear program, including uranium enrichment.

In the context of these discussions, President Trump cautioned President Xi against providing any form of support to Iran, whether direct or indirect. U.S. Ambassador to China, David Perdue, assured that China had confirmed it was not aiding Iran in any way.

The conflict has significantly disrupted energy flows through the crucial Strait of Hormuz, exacerbating tensions across the Gulf region, including Yemen and Lebanon. Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, and Turkey have been in talks to enhance military and intelligence cooperation amidst the growing security concerns in the region.
