Rome Summit Discusses Economic Prospects of Advancing Two-State Solution

Date:

Italy played host to the second day of the Global Alliance on the Two-State Solution meeting in Rome, a significant gathering that drew representatives from over 20 nations, along with members from the Arab League, the European Union, the United Nations, and Palestine. The focus of this assembly was to foster discussions aimed at promoting enduring peace in the Middle East.

Italian Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani emphasized the importance of the event, noting that it aligns with Rome’s expanding influence in global diplomacy and its commitment to peacebuilding efforts. This meeting, coupled with forthcoming talks between Israel and Lebanon, underscores Italy’s escalating role on the international stage.

Tajani reiterated Italy’s backing for the establishment of a Palestinian state, stressing that recognition should only be granted when conditions are ripe for a peaceful and stable state that can coexist with Israel. He underscored the necessity of mutual recognition, security, and dialogue as essential components for achieving a sustainable two-state solution.

Expressing concern over the escalating violence in the West Bank, Tajani condemned the attacks carried out by Israeli settlers. He also voiced opposition to any settlement expansions or annexations, warning that such actions could jeopardize the prospects for peace in the region.

The participants engaged in discussions focusing on diplomatic efforts to rejuvenate negotiations and enhance international collaboration. Their aim is to work towards a peaceful resolution of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, a complex issue that has long eluded an enduring solution.
