EU Seeks Action on $1 Billion Daily Trade Deficit With China

Date:

During a recent visit to China, EU Trade Commissioner Maroš Šefčovič highlighted the urgent need to address the significant trade imbalance between the European Union and China. The trade deficit, which Šefčovič described as unsustainable, is reportedly exceeding $1 billion daily. This issue has become a focal point in discussions aimed at strengthening economic relations between the two regions.

Šefčovič’s visit included meetings with representatives of European businesses operating in China, where he gathered insights into their challenges. These businesses are advocating for improved access to the Chinese market and enhanced protection for their economic interests, reflecting broader concerns over trade imbalances and market access.

As part of his itinerary, Šefčovič is set to meet with Chinese Commerce Minister Wang Wentao. Their discussions are expected to center on the EU’s growing trade deficit with China, along with potential measures to address these challenges. The talks are anticipated to explore the possibility of the EU imposing restrictions on imports of Chinese hybrid vehicles as part of a broader strategy to rectify trade imbalances.

The European Union’s examination of trade relations with China is part of a larger effort to ensure fair competition and reciprocal market access. The outcome of these discussions could have significant implications for future economic engagements between the EU and China, as both parties seek to find common ground in addressing trade disparities.
