Netherlands to Ban Smartphones in Schools Starting 2027 to Boost Focus

Date:

The Dutch government is set to implement a smartphone ban in schools starting January 1, 2027, as part of a broader initiative to shield children from digital distractions and online risks. This move, encapsulated in the policy named “At Home or in the Vault,” seeks to enhance students’ focus during school hours by prohibiting smartphone use during both lessons and break times.

While many Dutch schools have already adopted similar restrictions, the government aims to standardize the practice across all educational institutions. The initiative is one facet of a comprehensive strategy to bolster children’s online safety amid concerns about exposure to harmful content and digital addiction.

In addition to the smartphone ban, the Dutch government is advocating for a European minimum age requirement for social media use. This proposal underscores a push for technology companies to assume greater responsibility in ensuring their platforms are safe for young users.

As part of these efforts, the Netherlands is conducting a thorough review of popular digital services, including social media platforms, streaming services, and online games, to evaluate their compliance with stricter child-safety requirements. The government emphasizes the necessity of safe environments for children both offline and online, citing issues such as addictive platform designs, unwanted contact, and exposure to inappropriate content.
