ChatGPT Voice Functionality Ending for Mac Desktop Users

Date:

A major change is coming to ChatGPT on Mac computers. The voice conversation feature in the macOS desktop application will be discontinued beginning January 15, 2026. OpenAI announced this decision as part of its plan to focus on building more unified voice experiences across all platforms.
The discontinuation only impacts the Mac desktop app. Users can still access voice features through the ChatGPT website using any web browser, as well as through mobile apps on iOS and Android devices. Windows desktop users will also continue to have voice functionality. The Mac standalone application is the only platform losing this capability.
OpenAI has not provided extensive details about why the Mac version is being specifically targeted. However, the company’s emphasis on unified experiences suggests that the current Mac app’s voice infrastructure may not be compatible with future development plans. As voice interaction becomes more important in AI applications, standardization across platforms is crucial.
Users who rely on voice features for their workflows will need to make adjustments. People who use voice for accessibility reasons, professionals who multitask with hands-free conversations, or individuals who prefer speaking over typing will all face changes. Alternative platforms are available but may not provide the same integrated experience.
Industry experts believe this is likely a temporary removal rather than a permanent decision. OpenAI’s ongoing investment in voice technology across other products suggests that Mac users will eventually see an improved voice feature return. The current discontinuation probably enables infrastructure improvements that will benefit users in the long run.
