Greece maintained its lead in the Nations League group after an intense 2-2 draw against the Netherlands in Thessaloniki on Thursday. The Greek team dominated the first half, showcasing a strong performance that put them ahead with a two-goal lead by halftime.
The scoring opened in the 23rd minute when Fotis Ioannidis found the net thanks to a header from Giorgos Masouras. As the first half reached stoppage time, Masouras extended Greece’s advantage, capitalizing on a poor backpass from the Netherlands to score from close range.
However, the Netherlands came back fighting in the second half. Virgil van Dijk reduced the deficit in the 59th minute, heading in a goal from Joey Veerman’s corner. Despite Greece’s efforts to maintain their lead, including a crucial save by goalkeeper Konstantis Tzolakis late in the match, the Netherlands managed to equalize in the 89th minute. Tijjani Reijnders scored from close range, securing a draw for his team.
With this result, Greece remains at the top of their Nations League group with seven points, two points clear of the Netherlands. The Greek team is set to face Germany next on Sunday, as they aim to continue their strong performance in the league.
