Dutch Cabinet Faces Challenge as Right-Wing Alliance Sets Conditions on Key Policies

Date:

The Dutch cabinet is navigating a complex political landscape as it faces a series of demands from a right-wing alliance that could impact the government’s tax and policy plans. This newly formed coalition, comprising the far-right JA21, the orthodox Protestant SGP, and the farmer-focused BBB, is seeking to coordinate its demands on key issues such as asylum policy, nitrogen regulations, and abortion. In exchange for supporting the government’s broader tax plan, the alliance requires its conditions to be met.

The alliance’s demands include abandoning proposed tax hikes aimed at funding NATO defense spending, canceling a planned VAT increase on flowers, and raising profit exemptions for small businesses. Each party within the alliance is pushing for specific changes: BBB is targeting nitrogen policy adjustments, JA21 seeks stricter asylum measures, and the SGP wants to impose restrictions on late-term abortions, home abortions, and surrogacy.

This development poses a challenge for Prime Minister Rob Jetten, who is striving to secure wider parliamentary support. The coalition government, consisting of parties like D66 and CDA, is being urged by opposition groups to either align with left-wing parties such as PRO and Volt or to rely more heavily on right-wing factions. However, the alliance’s demands often conflict with the current government positions, particularly concerning asylum seeker distribution laws and defense-related tax measures.

The nitrogen policy remains a significant sticking point, with the current government measures deemed crucial for permit approvals. Any major alterations could risk losing support from parties like PRO, which has already expressed concerns over potential changes.

The cabinet must now deliberate on whether it can accommodate the alliance’s demands without jeopardizing its existing policies and the broader backing it receives from parliament. The outcome of these discussions will be pivotal in shaping the government’s ability to proceed with its policy and budgetary objectives amidst growing political divisions.
