Tesla Roadster Prototype with SpaceX Thrusters Showcased as Potential Flying Car

Date:

Elon Musk has introduced a groundbreaking prototype of the Tesla Roadster 2, showcasing its innovative rocket-thruster technology developed by SpaceX. In a demonstration held in Texas, the electric sports car displayed its ability to execute aerial maneuvers using thrusters, a testament to Musk’s vision of merging automotive and aerospace technologies.

The Tesla Roadster 2 prototype was demonstrated driving up a curved ramp and subsequently using its thrusters to perform complex movements such as rolls, facilitated by altitude controls and rear-mounted thrusters. Although the demonstration was conducted remotely to mitigate safety risks, Musk acknowledged potential legal challenges, noting that the vehicle might not comply with regulations in all jurisdictions.

Set to enter production in 2028, the Roadster 2 is expected to carry a price tag exceeding $200,000. Tesla has outlined plans for various versions of the vehicle, including a high-performance model and a specialized variant equipped with a thrust system. Additionally, a proposed single-seat rocket version featuring a complete flight system is anticipated to be offered by invitation only.

Tesla cautioned that the vehicle’s flying capabilities are not intended for use on public roads, emphasizing the need for regulatory approval and adherence to safety protocols. This demonstration underscores Musk’s ambitious efforts to integrate electric vehicle technology with rocket propulsion, highlighting both the potential and the challenges of this fusion.

While the prototype represents a significant leap in automotive innovation, practical application remains a question. Musk’s venture into creating a potential flying car will require navigating safety requirements and regulatory hurdles, leaving open the question of how soon such technology could become a viable option for consumers.
