The ‘Stans’ Scramble: Russia’s Waning Grip Sparks Superpower Rush to Central Asia

Date:

A new “scramble for the Stans” is underway as Russia’s waning grip on its former Soviet territories sparks a rush of diplomatic activity from global powers, with the US being the latest to enter the fray.
US President Donald Trump is set to host the five Central Asian leaders for a summit on November 6, according to announcements from the leaders of Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan.
This meeting follows a clear pattern. The EU, China, and Russia have all held similar high-level talks with the C5 this year, each vying to expand their economic and political footprint.
The war in Ukraine is the clear catalyst, prompting the C5 nations to seek new security and economic partners beyond their traditional reliance on Moscow.
The region is a key strategic prize, rich in rare earths and other resources. Its leaders are also coordinating to develop their lands into a crucial logistics corridor, bridging Asian and European markets.
